In January 1945, the 5th Infantry Division liberated the town of Diekirch as well as the villages north of Diekirch up to Hoscheid, Wahlhausen, Gralingen, Merscheid, Weiler, Nachtmanderscheid, and Putscheid. US military historians state the end of the Battle of the Bulge on January 25 or 28, 1945. In fact, the village of Leithum was liberated on February 1, 1945, by units of the 90th US Infantry Division. The upper town of Vianden was only liberated on February 12 and the lower part on February 22, 1945. It was the last town on the Luxembourg territory to be liberated. | |
